Open the Senses — two weeks, 15 min a day
You don't yet choose what to make. Not drawing, not writing, not music. The hand has to move first there is what comes after. And for two weeks, We show it to no one.

First we measure what you can do now
We look at where you are. This does not measure talent. It looks for what is holding your hand back.

Two habits
Julia Cameron's 〈The Artist's Way〉, from 1992, has lasted over thirty years because the method is simple. To fit our circumstances, Only the size was reduced.
After getting up By hand Write one page. The content does not matter. Writing "nothing to write" over and over is fine.
The rule The original calls for three pages; we start with one. And We do not read it again. The moment you read it, appraisal begins.
Once a week, about an hour, Alone Go out. It needn't be an exhibition — a stationery shop, a market, a hardware store, an old alley.
The rule Set no purpose. You are going to look, not to buy. Go with someone and conversation covers the senses.
What you built over two weeks We show it to no one. Not even to family.
Why Once there is someone to show it to, you make it to their standard. Let appraisal in before the senses open and the hand stops.
It needn't be a good drawing. The sentence needn't work. For two weeks, Nothing is graded.
Why Learn the technique first and you start grading your own work by it; once grading starts the pleasure goes; once the pleasure goes you quit.
Whether it's images, writing or sound — After the two weeks end is what you decide.
Why Pick a field first and the people who are good at it are the first thing you see. Then you feel beaten before you start.

Fourteen tasks over two weeks
One a day. Don't go over fifteen minutes. Overshooting one day and then resting two is the most common failure.
| Tier | Week 1 (7 days) | Week 2 (7 days) |
|---|---|---|
| A | Write half a page by hand · draw one thing you saw today (badly is fine) · copy out one line of a song you like · look out of the window for five minutes and write one sentence · list three things you loved as a child · pick one colour and photograph only that · An hour out on your own | Repeat the same task, stretched to one page · on the last day The easiest of the seven Writing it down |
| B | Write one page by hand · record three minutes of sound (anything) · take five photos and keep one · list ten things you dislike · one sentence on today's smell · fold or make something with your hands · An hour out on your own | The same tasks as week 1 A different way· on the last day, write down two fields you'd like to try |
| C | All of tier B + daily A 15-minute timerSet it and keep to it | Try two fields on alternate days, then Which one made the time go faster Writing it down |

Just keep this rule
- Don't go over fifteen minutes. Stopping while you still want more is what makes tomorrow happen.
- We do not read it again. Don't reread what you wrote that morning. Look at it once, two weeks later.
- Miss a day and you simply carry on. Don't start over. A missed day is just a missed day — pick up with the next day's task.
- Don't buy materials. For two weeks paper and a pen will do. Buy the kit first and you start feeling you must live up to it.
- We do not show it. This is the most important rule. Keep it for two weeks and that's enough.
If you completed two weeks
Next is the six-week 〈Open the Senses〉 — forty-two tasks and a weekly check-in. Then ten weeks of 〈Waking the Grain〉, where you pick one of drawing, writing or sound and go deep. There you learn technique for the first time, and show it to someone for the first time — and only if you want to.
